- Causes of World War II Since the end of World War I the German people were devastated by the Treaty of Versailles which made them accept the blame of causing the war, had to pay the damage caused by the war, and they also had to demilitarize as well as to give up land.The German people were poor and were not satisfied with the government, so Adolf Hitler took power, became a Chancellor in 1933 and also promised to rip apart the Treaty of Versailles.Hitler then secretly increases his army and builds warships and creates an air force.Hitler in 1936 made two important alliances with Japan and Italy.Then Hitler in 1939 invades Poland causing Britain and France to declare war on Germany.
